Although retaining the title Douay—Rheims Biblethe Challoner revision was a new version, tending to take as its base text the King James Bible [4] rigorously checked and extensively adjusted for improved readability and consistency with the Clementine edition of the Vulgate. Further, the translators of the KJV make specific reference to the Douay version in their translators’ preface.

This is possible only because the Douay-Rheims, alone among English Bibles, and even in the Challoner revision, attempted a word-for-word translation of the underlying Vulgate. Bishop Challoner was one of the Vicars Apostolic who governed the English Church in the absence of an ordinary Hierarchy, and ruled the London District during perhaps its bleakest period.
