Brief review of the basics and then detailed accounts of how different attachment styles interact with attachment based therapy. Indeed, it is his ability to engage all of these elements at once that makes this such a gem of a book…. This is one of the best psychotherapy texts I have read. To help therapists increase their self-awareness, he suggests that we adopt a stance of mindfulness, i. Very clear and authoritative but overall a bit dull, it sort of put me off attachment theory – I recognise its vital contribution to understanding clients but it doesn’t account for the wonderful richness and contradictory nature of human personality and experience.
As as mindfulness book, it is just mediocre. While not an academically acclaimed explanation of attachment psychoterapy, I still rate Wallin’s work highly because he makes the information psychptherapy easy to understand. It is a vital resource for those who are interested in how progress in our understanding of attachment processes may be applied in a clinical context.
